The 2011 City of Orange Golf Championships has been played and won. The event this year was decided over 36 holes due to the first round at Wentworth Golf Club being abandoned due to rain and the greens being unplayable.

Golf Orange chairman Guy Chapman said it was disappointing to have to declare the opening day’s play a wash out but they had no other choice. “There were 4 or 5 greens under water’ Chapman said of the Wentworth course. “We made the decision pretty early because the greens were not clearing at all”

Better weather greeted players at the Orange Ex-Services’ Country Club on the Sunday with conditions a little wet under foot. The final day’s play at Duntryleague resulted in fantastic spring weather with the sun shining and a crisp fresh breeze. The biggest achievement over the weekend was the fact that no one missed their tee times despite the beginning of day light savings on the Sunday.

“The sun was a sight for sore eyes after the conditions experienced from the first day’s play” Chairman of Golf Orange, Guy Chapman stated. “It certainly brought the smiles onto people’s faces”

Over 160 registrations were accepted by the time players teed off on the Sunday, with approximately 120 players being represented from out of town. This is the most pleasing aspect of all, with so many keen golfers willing to come and sample what Orange has to offer in the way of Golf, food and wine.

Over 40 individual Golf Clubs were represented during the event, with huge contingents from Cabramatta and Fox Hills Golf Clubs. Cumberland, Yowani, Kurri Kurri, Charlestown, Gungahlin Lakes and Orchard Hills also had their fair share of golfing enthusiasts.

Over 140 people were in attendance for the presentation at Duntryleague Golf Club on the Monday Night where players were treated to complimentary nibbles and drinks. Not to mention the $6,000 in prizes presented to the various winners on the night for their efforts

The eventual scratch winner of the men’s event, after trailing by a shot from Michael Campbell, (70) (no, not the 2005 US Open Winner from Pinehurst, although it would of been nice) after the first round, was defending champion Robert Payne of Duntryleague Golf Club with a 2 round total of 141. Craig Stojanovic of Wentworth Golf Club was runner up on 147 on a count back, 6 shots adrift of the winner. Michael (Shultz) Campbell also from Duntryleague, came third with a second round 77 and a 147 total. Josh Clarke of Windsor Golf Club on 148 came in fourth.

The Ladies scratch winner was Alison Seib of Orange Ex-Services’ Country Club with a 36 hole total of 160, with rounds of 79 and 81. Second was Margot Sullivan also of Orange Ex-Services’ Country Club with 181. Third was Jamberoo golfer, Loretta Green with rounds of 91 and 92, 183 total.

As defending champions this year, both Robert and Alison had the services of an Audi Q5 and A4 respectively over the weekend courtesy of Audi Centre Orange, something both will look forward to again next year.

Payne said he was happy to maintain his winning run in the event.
“It’s good to win again” Payne said. “I just wanted to keep that record I have. It was very pleasing to do that”

Orange Ex-Services’ Country Club member Alison Seib (handicap 8) was delighted with her win and was confident of playing well on all three courses prior to the rain shortened event but none more than the Country Club. “I play there all the time”, she said. “I’ve played at Duntryleague a fair bit and I’ve been a member of Wentworth, so I know all three pretty well”

The event organisers will now start to organise next year’s event which will be run from Saturday 29 September to Monday 1 October 2012.
“Consolidating the event to the one golf club each day, bringing all grades and genders together, has really enhanced the tournament” Chapman said.

Chapman urges all potential participants to book accommodation now for 2012 to save disappointment as accommodation in and around Orange is in short supply due to the popularity of the region. 2012 Entry Forms will be available in the new year on www.golforange.com.au.
